RETURN TO JAPAN 2015 - COMPLETE TRIP REPORT

Since I'm running out of space here on my blog, I thought it would be easiest to post my complete report from our last trip April 2015 in one spot.

I also thought it would be fun to post our trip in highlight form so...Here's a link to our YouTube 2015 Japan highlights video:

2015 Japan Trip Highlights

Day 1 & 2 Travel Days

The alarm went off VERY early today at 3:15 am!  Our pick up for the airport was coming at 4:00 am.  We used "Super Shuttle" which is a local shuttle service in Orlando.  I will say the pick up was MUCH better than our return.  In fact, I will NOT be using this service again after that disaster, but that is another story for the end of the trip report.

We arrived way too early at the airport but the shuttle service said that they pick up always this early for international flights to make sure you have plenty of time to check in.  The morning was uneventful, some bagels, some small talk about all the things we can't wait to see and do again!  And before we knew it we were boarding the 1st leg of our trip to Atlanta.  This is a really short flight from Orlando, about 1.5 hours.   We arrived at Atlanta on time and we had about 2 hours before or flight to Tokyo.  We took the tram to the international gate area (very nice and new), found something to eat for lunch and got ready for our big flight!  We had purchased the extra leg room or economy comfort plus upgraded seats and had the bulkhead which was nice (in theory however my tray table was broken and kept hitting me in the leg repeatedly during the 12 hour flight).

We arrived in Tokyo about 3:15 PM Tokyo time. I was SOO Happy to be back!  I cried when I saw the “Welcome to Japan” sign!  I made Thomas take a photo by it.  We had paid for shared transportation services through a company called "Green Tomato" and they were there waiting for us.  Even though it was supposed to be shared we were the only people in the van.  This service is a bit more expensive than the airport limousine bus but well worth the extra cost and we will use them again on our next trip (we are already planning October 2016). We were at our hotel in no time (I think maybe 30 minutes later).  We checked into the Hilton Tokyo Bay (Thomas’ favorite) for the first 2 nights of our trip.  We booked the same type of room we had on our previous trip in 2013 a King Bed, non-smoking Ocean View (Bay) Celebrio room.  So this meant we had the minibar re-fill every day which I really enjoy.  There’s always a cold water or soda in there.   By the time we reached the hotel for check in it was POURING rain out.  So we got settled into our room and then decided to head over to Ikspiari --which is Tokyo Disney's version of WDW's Downtown Disney(soon to be known as Disney Springs).     Not only was it raining but it was VERY cold and windy.  I actually ended up putting a turtleneck sweater on and a jacket and scarf and gloves – and I was STILL freezing!  It was absolutely miserable out.  So much for our plans to walk around Tokyo that evening.   So we exited the Disney Resort Line (monorail) and headed straight for TGI Friday’s.  There was no line to be seated for a table and we were hungry.  Plus we had dined here our first night at Tokyo Bay last trip.  I honestly cannot remember what we ate this night for dinner lol.  It was so miserable out that walking around the only partially covered Ikspiari was just not worth getting drenched.  After dinner we decided to hop back on the Resort Line and head back to our hotel.  We just unpacked, got settled and organized, showered and skyped my mom so I could see how our little puppy Savannah was doing.  Last year in 2014 we lost both of our dogs to old age.  It was very sad and difficult for us to lose them.  In December we brought a new member into our family, her name is Savannah.  She is a West Highland white terrier. She was only 6 months old at the time of our trip to Japan in April, so my mom stayed in our home and took care of her while we were in Japan.  We were both very tired from the trip (I did not get any sleep on the flight over) so we went to bed early and got ready for our next day!

 DAY 3

It’s 6:00 in the morning and we are in Tokyo! There’s NO WAY I can sleep!  We woke up, got dressed and headed down to the Conbini (convenience store) to pick up some breakfast.  Thomas must have been hungry because he picked up a lot of food!  We purchased some smoothies (we liked them last trip) and some other pastry type things.  After breakfast we decided to take an early train into Tokyo Station as we needed to exchange our vouchers for our Japan Rail Pass.  We were very early (around 8:30 so there wasn’t much of a line to exchange our vouchers).  We walked around the station and took some photos.  Then we decided to walk around Marunouchi and over to Yurakucho station where my favorite O1O1 Department store is.  Very little was open before 11 AM but we were able to go into Dean and Deluca for some tea and Thomas got himself a HUGE pretzel pastry.  At 11:00 we went into O1O1 and I scoped out the handbag and accessory shop “Passage Mignon” I LOVE that little shop.  I purchased a nice bag there last year.  I took a look around but we needed to catch the train to meet Yoshie and Takashi for lunch over at Tokyo Dome City at 12:00.  When we got off the train the area at Tokyo Dome City was really cool and it had stopped raining and the sun came out!  It was a PERFECT Spring afternoon! Tokyo Dome City has many restaurants, an amusement park and hotels and of course the Dome itself.  It always amazes me when you get off the train in Tokyo at a new stop how unique each area of the city is.  We were meeting our friends at Sizzler for lunch - which is kinda funny because I haven't been to a Sizzler since I was a kid but, they wanted us to feel at home and they thought some USA style comfort food would be nice.  We had a great lunch and a great time catching up with our friends and then it was time to head over at 2:00 to the Tokyo Giants Baseball game!  We didn’t have very good seats but I was surprised that we were able to get seats at all!  I was really excited to see a baseball game in Tokyo!  It was really cool to see the cheerleaders, the girls with the kegs running around and the crowd chanting for the Giants.  We really had a great time.  We decided at about the 6th inning to get up and check out the stadium and do some shopping for souvenirs.  After the game we decided to take the train to Ginza and walk around.  We saw our first Cherry Blossom tree over by Ginza Station.  When Thomas spotted the Sony building I knew where we were headed next.  Our last trip he really wanted to go in but the building was closed the day we were there.  This time it was open!  We went inside and received information on what was on each floor and then he spotted this little pub that was attached to the lobby called “Pub Cardinale”.  We were both hungry for dinner by now (it was 5:00) so we went in.  Apparently that pub has been there for many years.  It was pretty crowded actually.  The food was really good.  After we ate we made our way through the Sony building.  Thomas explored speakers, stereos, televisions, etc.  It wasn’t very exciting to me but hey, it’s his vacation too.   After spending an eternity in the Sony Building we decided to walk on through Ginza (my favorite) we stopped (briefly) into Matsuya Ginza department store, and tried to find the Nissan Gallery that we visited in 2013 but it was closed off, the building was being completely rebuilt.  We found the CUTEST pet shop called “The Barkery” they sold very high end dog supplies, accessories and designer dogs!  We purchased a lovely collar for Savannah here (it was the most money I’ve ever spent on a collar in my life!) We were getting really tired so we decided to head back towards Yurackucho station so I could do some shopping in O1O1.  I ended up purchasing a beautiful handbag and a watch for myself.  It was definitely a full day.  We returned to the hotel around 10 PM.

DAY 4

Once again we woke up very early and purchased some breakfast at the Conbini in the hotel lobby.  After skyping with my mom back at home we decided to head to Asakusa this morning.  It was a BEAUTIFUL sunny day mid 70's ....Absolutely Perfect weather.  We walked through the Nakamise Dori shopping arcade rather quickly (didn’t stop to shop) and headed to the Tourist Information Center observation deck to take some photos since it was so clear and bright out.  After that we were headed back to Sensoji Temple and decided to take a rickshaw ride through Asakusa.  We had a great guide and he was a lot of fun.  I was really glad we did this.  When we finished we noticed that we should head back because we were checking out of the Hilton today and checking into the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel!  It was actually too early to check in so they just held our luggage for us.  I couldn’t wait to stay here.  We took a quick tour in 2013 and I thought the hotel was just gorgeous.  We are Disney Vacation Club members so as soon as we picked our dates to travel I called to see if we could use our points to stay here and it was available!!  We decided to grab some lunch at Kua Aina over at Ikspiari and then head over to Tokyo Sky Tree!  My original plan was to do skytree late afternoon so we could see the view from the day and night….didn’t work out exactly this way though.  The lines were CRAZY long at Skytree but we learned that if we had our passports we could bypass the regular line and go on another line for foreign visitors.  You need your passport and it does cost more money but well worth it to bypass the looonnngg queue.  We waited for about 25 minutes to get on the elevator up to the first observation level which is called the “Tembo Deck”  this is 350 meters.  We weren’t even there for 5 minutes when Thomas got on the line to go to the highest observation level.  However, we didn’t know that as soon as you buy the ticket to the next observation area you have to go!  So he’s waving at me crazily to come over and get on line for another elevator up!  It is definitely worth the extra cost to go up to the highest observation deck called “Tembo Gallery” is 450 meters high.  We had a great visit and walked around for at least 30 minutes and for some reason decided to exit (I don’t know why but we did).  We did check out the gift shop first at both the Tembo Gallery as well as the lobby area of the building.  Thomas then decided he wanted a snack so we stopped into Calbee….OMG.  Chocolate covered potato chips!!  Handmade – right there in front of you!  AMAZING.  This ended up being our dinner that evening. No joke.  They were so good and so filling.  By the time we grabbed a seat and enjoyed our Calbee the night sky was out and the Skytree was lit up all around us!  If we had stayed up on the observation deck a little longer we’d have seen the view at night!  Next time I guess.

We walked around the Skytree mall and shops a little longer and decided to head back to Asakusa to see Sensoji Temple at night (I always see photos online and wanted to see it at night for myself and get some photos).  It was already getting late by the time we made our way back to the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel.  We checked in and were taken to our room.  When the luggage porter pulled back the curtains to show us our view I couldn’t believe it – CINDERELLA CASTLE! The light show was on so we could see the projection on the castle.  Our room was absolutely stunning.  We settled in and got unpacked as this would be our room for the next 7 nights.

Day 5

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY!  Well, our first morning at Tokyo Disneyland Hotel we decided to eat breakfast at the buffet downstairs.  It was quite expensive – the equivalent of $65 USD but well worth it.  It was really very rainy and windy today so we decided to go to Odaiba this day and check out the Miraikan which is also known as the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.  I was really excited to see Asimo, The Honda robot!  I was excited to take the Yurikamome train as I’ve seen it on tv a million times.  It’s self-driving and looks like a monorail. Very cool.  When we arrived at the museum we decided to get the all access ticket, plus movie admission to their planetarium area.  I’m very glad we did because we really enjoyed all of the exhibits.  We even did a tour on the personal mobility device called the Uni-Cub.  Thomas did an interactive exhibit where you can do robotic surgery to remove a tumor (very cool).  We spent almost 8 hours at the museum today.  We had a great lunch, enjoyed all of the exhibits. It was a fantastic way to spend a rainy day.  I highly recommend it.  It was after 5pm already and we were getting hungry and tired.  We decided to head back to Ikspiari and find something for dinner (Thomas wanted Kua Aina again so that’s what we ended up having).  After dinner we walked around the shops of Ikspiari and made it back to our hotel room at 9pm.

Day 6

MORE RAIN!  Yuck!  We started off our day having breakfast at the expensive buffet again.  However it was very lovely.  Well worth the extra cost.  After breakfast we utilized the early entrance to Tokyo Disney Land.  We got our fast passes for Monsters Inc. and decided to walk around.  It was raining but not heavily.  One of those misty rains.  We checked out the merchandise at World Bazaar and then decided to go on a few attractions – Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mickey’s Philharmagic, Peter Pan’s Flight, Pinnochio’s Daring Journey, Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, Monsters Inc, Star Tours.  We actually went on many attractions this morning!  I even got myself a popcorn bucket over in Toontown with the caramel popcorn in it!  We went to Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall for Lunch.  The theming here is unbelievable just so cool! All of the colors, everything is so fantastic for a quick service restaurant!  I wish we had this at Walt Disney World.  After lunch we decided to take the monorail over to Tokyo Disney Sea….because we are Disney Resort guests we can buy multiple park passports (like our park hopper tickets here in the states).  It was not very crowded so we were able to get on to our favorite attractions Journey to the Center of the Earth as well as Aquatopia over in Port Discovery.  I also wanted to check out the Duffy/Shellie May store J I may or may not have come home with a new Duffy bear.   It was starting to rain heavier and we needed to get back to the hotel to get dressed and ready for dinner.  We would be meeting Yoshie and Takashi in Marounuchi over near Tokyo Station at the Palace Hotel at 6:15.  We made it to the station in plenty of time but when we got in the taxi (it was POURING) I mistakenly asked him to take us the “Imperial Palace Hotel” well-- there’s an Imperial Hotel and a Palace Hotel….we needed the Palace hotel but he took us to the Imperial hotel! So after standing in the behemoth lobby for 10 minutes and not seeing Yoshie, I knew we were not in the right place so I checked my email again….yep, we needed the Palace Hotel!  Another taxi ride later we met up with Yoshie and Takashi at a lovely restaurant called “The Grand Kitchen” the food was FANTASTIC! We had a great time catching up with them and really enjoyed the best meal of our trip!

Day 7

Well the first thing I do in the morning is go to the window to see what the day looks like.  Thankfully, it was an absolutely gorgeous day out!  Sunny but very very windy.  Our plan of the day was to go to Tokyo Disney Sea and then meet up with Yoshie and her mom for afternoon tea at the park and then take the train into Tokyo later that afternoon.  We had a great morning at Tokyo Disney Sea.  We were able to get onto a bunch of attractions – Journey to the Center of the Earth, 20,000 leagues under the sea, Indiana Jones, Raging Sprits, Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage.  We had lunch over in the Cape Cod section at the Cape Cod Cook Off…I wanted the Duffy plate and mug and lunch bag (all up charges which came to a grand total of $50 for lunch….and the food was not good).  After lunch I did some more Duffy and Shelly May shopping and then it was getting a little drizzly and the wind was CRAZY!  WE decided to go back to the hotel room to get warmer jackets and our umbrellas.  Thomas decided to take a nap and I went to Tokyo Disneyland (since we can walk into the park from our hotel room).  I walked around had a snack, took some photos and enjoyed the afternoon.  About an hour later I went to meet Thomas at the room so we could head back to Tokyo Disney Sea to meet Yoshie and her mom for tea at 3:00.  When we met up with them at the park entrance they said that they were worried about the wind causing their train to stop running.  Apparently, high winds shut trains down in Tokyo!  Good thing she told me because we were all set to take the train into Marunouchi and we wouldn’t have gotten back that night!  So we chatted with them for a little while, and her mom presented us with a gift of Mickey Mouse Easter bread!  We said goodbye to them and decided to spend the rest of our day at Tokyo Disney Sea.  We didn’t go on any attractions but walked around, people watched, shopped (yes I did a lot of damage!) and had dinner at Ristorante di Canaletto (fabulous).  We had dinner here on our last trip and it was so delicious I knew I had wanted to go back there.  I would say it is my favorite "in the park" restaurant of any Disney park (and I live 6 minutes to Epcot at home).  After dinner we decided to head back to the hotel since all parades and things were cancelled due to the high winds (it was getting extremely windy to the point where it was bothersome). We called it a night since we had a VERY early start tomorrow taking the bullet train to Kyoto!

Day 8

Well luckily the winds have calmed down and it is a GORGEOUS day!  We are headed to Kyoto…..at the train station at 6:15 am!  We got into Tokyo Station very early (6:30) got reserved seats on the shinkansen to Kyoto!  We were meeting our guide at 11:00 at Kyoto station.  We actually got to the station at 10:00 so we had some time to explore the station before meeting our guide.  I reserved a volunteer guide this day.  Now, for me it was my 2nd time to Kyoto but Thomas’ first.  I do NOT recommend using a volunteer guide if it’s your first visit.  Use a chartered tour. You spend way too much time going from train to bus to subway with a volunteer guide.  We were exhausted before we even saw our first shrine! We started out having lunch at a very nice restaurant which was vegetarian (at my request).  Then we visited the Golden Pavilion, Heian Jinju Shrine and finally Kiyomizudera Temple.  We did plan on Fushimi Inari but it we were EXHAUSTED.  Way too much running around.  Crowded busses, subways, trains… way too tiring. Our guide was very nice and very accommodating.  He showed us everything we wanted to see and was very sweet.  It was just WAY too much running around for one single day.  Next time we will definitely stay over a night or 2 and take our time.  Also, another reason we didn't press on after Kiyumizudera was that there must have been some shellfish in something we ate at lunch (even though the waiter said there wasn't) but even if things get crossed contaminated I can have a reaction and I did.  My legs, feet, arms, hands all were all swollen by the time we had left Heian Jinju Shrine.  So I was in a lot of pain by the time we reached Kiyumizudera.  I had luckily had some Benedryl with me and I took it and while the swelling didn't get worse I wasn't feeling all that well.  We ended up catching a 5:25 Shinkansen back to Tokyo.  I felt so horrible by the time we got back to the hotel I didn't even want to go out to dinner.  Thomas picked up some food in Kyoto Station and we ate on the train.

Day 9

I was still not feeling 100% and my legs and feet were swollen with a rash from whatever dye or shellfish was hiding in yesterday's lunch.  But, I had to get up and pull myself together.  Today we were meeting another volunteer guide named Mika.  She would be showing us Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Harajuku and Shibuya (all places I didn’t quite get to on my last trip).  She was LOVELY!  She met us at Maihama station at 9:00 am sharp!  We became instant friends and enjoyed each others company on the train ride to Shinjuku.  Shinjuku Gyoen is STUNNING during Sakura (cherry blossom season)!  I could not believe the size of the trees!  I have seen cherry blossom trees in Washington DC but never this large! We spent a real good amount of time here in the park.  Even my husband couldn’t stop taking photos!  It was a true highlight of our trip.  After the park we made our way over to Harajuku station to Meiji Shrine.  I had been here on the 2013 trip but Thomas hadn’t.  So it was nice to bring him there to see.  We were lucky enough to see a Japanese Traditional wedding taking place!  Also I decided to do an offering and wrote down my wish for this year to the deities.   After Meiji Shrine we walked back by Harajuku station and over to Takeshita Dori to do some shopping OMG I LOVE HARAJUKU!  We did some shopping (Savannah got a Hello Kitty fancy collar) and then headed to Omotesando to where we were going to have lunch on Cat Street.  A restaurant called Smoke House.  OMG AMERICAN BBQ?  IN TOKYO…..THE BEST EVER!  I had read about this restaurant somewhere on line and Mika was able to find it for us!  The food was delicious.  During lunch we mentioned that we had really enjoyed the Grand Kitchen restaurant where we had dinner with Yoshie the other night we tried to make a reservation on line for our last evening but it wouldn’t work.  Mika was nice enough to call for us and got us a reservation for Saturday night!  After lunch we made our way over to Shibuya to the scramble.  I couldn’t wait to cross the Shibuya Scramble!  We finally were able to see the Hachiko statue that we were dying to see for 2 years. MANY Photos were taken, we even went into Tokyu hands to the Hachiko store and purchased some Hachi souvenirs…yes even for the puppy.... Savannah got a Hachi collar.  It was now 5:00 PM and Mika needed to go back home.  We said goodbye to our new friend and made our way back to the hotel.   We decided to have dinner at Kua Aina since we had a large lunch and Thomas just can’t get enough of Kua Aina!  It really is THAT good!  After dinner we hung around Ikspiari, shopping and checked out the grocery store (it was actually interesting to walk around a grocery store).

Day 10

Well, I can't believe it but this was our last full day in Japan.  While the swelling was much better on my legs I still wasn't feeling 100%.  There was NO WAY I was going to let it stop me from enjoying my last full day in Tokyo!  It was very nice out so we decided to go into Tokyo station and see where the day takes us.  We ended up buying a day pass for the on and off bus.  This way I wouldn't have to walk as much.  It was so lovely out that it was nice to sit up on top (it’s an open air bus) and ride to Tokyo Tower, and Odaiba.  We couldn’t decide if we should get off in Odaiba so we decided not to (??) and then ended up getting off the bus in Ginza, taking the train to Harajuku and shopping on Takeshita Dori again.  This time Thomas tried the famous Harajuku crepes!  We also went into the Daiso to get some souvenirs for my nieces.  After Takeshita Dori we were hungry for lunch so we found our way back over to Smokehouse.  SOOO good!  Thomas wanted to go back to Hachiko after lunch but I wanted to do that at night instead so we went back to Ginza and shopped (O1O1 of course) and before we knew it we were almost ready for our 6:00 dinner at the Grand Kitchen!  It’s amazing how fast time passes when you are just walking around going in and out of shops!  Our dinner at Grand Kitchen was lovely.  I can’t wait to go back to Tokyo and eat here again!  I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant.  They have a price fix menu for dinner and the service and the food are very high quality.  If you've read my original trip report from 2013 you'd know I am originally from New York City.  I have been lucky enough to eat at some of the best restaurants in the world, and this one is definitely in the top 10 restaurants that I've ever eaten in.  After dinner we took the Subway back to Shibuya to see Hachiko statue and take MORE Hachi photos and to cross the Shibuya Scramble at night with all the cool neon lights!  After this I was EXHAUSTED! We made our way back to the hotel.

Day 11

I can't believe this is our last day in Japan!  NOOOOOO!  Say it isn't so!  I don't want to go home....but I do because I miss my puppy, Savannah!   Since our flight wasn’t until 5PM we had pretty much the entire day to spend in Tokyo.  We took the train to Tokyo Station and had breakfast over at Dean and Deluca by O1O1.  After breakfast we decided to take the Yamanote line over to Akihabara since it was the only thing I didn’t get to do on our trip!  We spent a good portion of our day in Akihabara! It is SO COOL!  The shops, the lights, the people – I can’t wait to go back next time!  After Akihabara we went back over to Ginza and Yurakucho Station.  I love to walk from there through Marunouchi.  I wanted to run into O1O1 one last time to make sure there wasn't anything else that I needed!  And, we ended up purchasing another carry on piece of luggage and some slippers for me to wear on the plane. We then took the train back to Maihama and Thomas wanted one last lunch at Kua Aina. Which in retrospect was a great idea since the food on the flight was AWFUL.   Our hotel pick up was 3:00.  The Green Tomato shared service once again was only for the 2 of us.  And we were back at the airport before we knew it.   Sad, sad sad that we are leaving our beloved Tokyo.

Leaving makes me cry

This trip was absolutely spectacular.  We have fallen even more in love with Japan and even though we were not planning to return again until 2017, we just can't wait that long and have decided to return next year 2016 in the Fall.  I'm aiming for Mid-late October but it could be a little sooner or a little later depending on prices of flights/hotels.....stay tuned!
